Racism and Totalitarian Nationalism

Another factor that may undermines democracy is totalitarian nationalism, which turns into chauvinism and racism.
Patriotism in itself is not a bad thing. Pride in one's country and culture is definitely an important cultural and individual ballast. However, the form of nationalism that aims directly at alienating and depreciating others does not promote a democratic society. This behaviour excludes people from the community, whereas a sense of community and trust are prerequisites for democracy.
